Is it ok to put unleaded gas in a VW GTI?

I was seriously considering buying an earlier model (90s) of the VW GTI. However after hearing that they are supposed to take performance grade gas, im having second thoughts. Is this true that they need high performance? Will it damage the engine to use unleaded or will it just run better on high performance gas?

Thanks! Is it ok to put unleaded gas in a VW GTI?I own and drive vw's for a living... There is definetly a difference in the type of fuel. You will get better MPG. And you will have better accelerator reponse. As well less emmisions.. And it burns cleaner in the motor and leaves less residue. As well it also has a cleaner that keeps injectors and others clean. If you keep track like i do you will notice a difference. And for the little extra you pay it pays for itself. But not in one tank. As well if you add all the additives like octane booster, fuel injector cleaner and gasline antifreeze.. Its cheaper to put the performance gas in.Is it ok to put unleaded gas in a VW GTI?
All gas is unleaded. The VR6 Volkswagens are supposed to use a higher octane gas but the 2.0s are fine with low grade.

Are you looking at a mk2 or mk3? Mk2s ended in the early 90's and mk3 started then so you could be referring to either.

Whichever it is I've seen both run on low grade gas and they did just fine.

Higher octane does NOT mean better gas mileage. I hate when people think that. It just changes the amount of compression needed before the gas will ignite without a spark. Lower octane gas will combust under the least amount of compression so when cars are built with high compression ratios they need higher octane. Using an octane too low can cause knocking and will damage the engine (although newer VWs put a knock sensor in so this doesn't happen, instead you lose power) But using an octane that is higher than needed isn't beneficial. Is it ok to put unleaded gas in a VW GTI?all gas is unleaded now it just has different chemicals in it to make it a higher octane,so that will be all you will be able to buy for it,i would use higher octane though if the owners manual cal so for it,you can try 8 octane because most cars built since the 90,s will run good off it,if it dont, go to a higher octane rating like 98 or 91 octane,87 wont hurt it though, good luck.Is it ok to put unleaded gas in a VW GTI?
its pretty much a waste running higher octane fuel in any of the 1.8/2.0 vw unless you built the motor up and have some insane compression...im guessing the motor has at least 100k on it too... just run the 89 you will be fineIs it ok to put unleaded gas in a VW GTI?You can put any gas in any vehicle. It won't damage the engine. It may run better with high octane(depends on how much you believe the advertising)Is it ok to put unleaded gas in a VW GTI?
Right, leaded fuel is no longer available. Regular unleaded fuel would suit the engine just fine for everyday driving.
The rule of thumb is 'if it's a turbo engine, it NEEDS premium gas'
