How can I tell if my 1988 VW Golf is MK1 or MK2?

I just bought a 1988 VW Golf. Is there any place that I can find out if it is a MK1 or MK2?How can I tell if my 1988 VW Golf is MK1 or MK2?You might run the VIN at Carfax.com. You don't have to pay to get the basic info. How can I tell if my 1988 VW Golf is MK1 or MK2?
It's a mark 2, unless it's a convertible. They continued making the convertible mark 2 shape after they introduced the new mark 3 car.

Mark 1 cars are more angular and just look old fashioned, whereas mark 2 cars are slightly bulbus looking and have really odd looking back ends. We have one which is 1992, the last year they made the mark 2. Next time we will get a bmw 1 series since they are the only rear wheel drive small hatch available. How can I tell if my 1988 VW Golf is MK1 or MK2?mk1 stopped in 1984, so its a mk2How can I tell if my 1988 VW Golf is MK1 or MK2?
Unless it's a cabriolet a 1988 Golf will be a mk2.

Just for absolute confirmation the mk1 tail lights will be rectangular and the mk2 will be more triangular. How can I tell if my 1988 VW Golf is MK1 or MK2?you can go to VWvortex.com, where you find out that MK1s are any a1 Chassis from 1976-1984 (rabbits/jettas). the only mk1 chassis car that was built after 1984 is the rabbit convertible, later known as a Cabriolet. Only after 1993 would a convertible cabriolet be known as a Cabrio and it is based on a Mk3 chassis.

the mk2 class is from 1985-1992. This includes all the golf/gti/jettas

Mk3 is 1993-1999

Mk4 is 1999-2005

then there are the b classes, which include passats/dashers/quantums etc.
