What type of gas should i use in a VW GTI?

I've heard 87, 91, and 93. ive heard 87 decreases power, but is it really noticeable? is 93 octane worth the 20 extra cents on the gallon? should i switch to a VW Golf which is Diesel?What type of gas should i use in a VW GTI?When I bought my GTI the dealer said I should use 91 or higher.
