You must keep it in good shape and drive defensively and be aware of everything around you. They're also great to learn about cars cos the air cooled engine is really easy to work on. If yer in high school, take auto cos you can work on your own car then.
Others are correct about cross winds blowing the bus around but if you are aware of the conditions and paying attention you'll be fine. If cross winds get too bad, what do you do? Pull off the road at a safe place and wait it out.
Also had 2 1989 Vanagons, the wasserboxer version of the bus. I loved them all, miss them much.
good luck hope you get one!!How can i convince my parents that a vw bus is not going to be the death of me?
I ended up getting one. I love it like my brother. It's name is sunshine, sure it's a pain in the ***, but in the end i believe it's worth it. Thanks for the support Buslady

How can i convince my parents that a vw bus is not going to be the death of me?Unfortunately, they are right. It's under powered, and with its lines, it drives like a box kite in any kind of windy conditions.I owned one, the camper edition with the sink and stove and sleeper.
It's also very high maintenance being air cooled. You absolutely can't skip an oil change, and you have to keep the valves adjusted and the air ways clear.
The steer tires are directly under you, so it also takes some getting used to when you drive it.
If, despite all that, you just have to have it, please get John Muir's book on maintenance too.

Peace. How can i convince my parents that a vw bus is not going to be the death of me?
your parents have a reason to worry, they are underpowered, light, and catch wind like a sail. My dad has a bad story of seeing one cross three lanes of traffic and flip over the gaurd rail in a strong cross wind. They are neat, but in most conventional methods of rating a vehicle, they suck. They are nowhere near as safe as any new small vehicle. How can i convince my parents that a vw bus is not going to be the death of me?Those things are a death trap. There is nothing but a thin piece of sheet metal separating you from the rear bumper of the car in front of you when you crash.
I'm with your parents.
