How much will it cost me to replace my 2000 VW Passat Heater Core?
How much will it cost me to replace my 2000 VW Passat Heater Core?Parts and Labor? Not sure how much this might run. ThanksHow much will it cost me to replace my 2000 VW Passat Heater Core?It depends where you take it to and if you have an air conditioner. To replace it the mechanic has to take apart the dash. I had a quote from a dealer for my Ford Taurus 93 and it would have been $600, for some reason if you have an air conditioner rather than just a vent system it takes longer work. A friend of my husband did it for $150 and a couple cases of beer. The part itself is less that $100.virtual villagers 5
Looking at a 1970 VW Bus how much to replace / repair leaking gas tank? I know you ahve to pull the engine?
I am looking at buying a 1970 VW Bus it has a gas leak that I suspect is the gas tank leaking I know you have to pull the whole engine out to get to the gas tank. What would the average cost in labor to do this job run?Looking at a 1970 VW Bus how much to replace / repair leaking gas tank? I know you ahve to pull the engine?Average R%26amp;R for a VW air cooled engine is about $200 at a VW specialty shop.Looking at a 1970 VW Bus how much to replace / repair leaking gas tank? I know you ahve to pull the engine? If you find it is the tank leaking, it depends if the tank is rusted through or it's been punctured. If the later it might be possible to mend, without removing the engine. There are products for this purpose. I did a repair on ford van, the patch done the job. Just another option.
Answer No 1 very good.Looking at a 1970 VW Bus how much to replace / repair leaking gas tank? I know you ahve to pull the engine?make sure it is not the tank first, there are lines that could be the culprit.
pulling and reinstalling an engine could be 1000.oo so be sure to track down any possible leaks.
pressurising at the gas cap might force fuel from the leak, just be sure that you know if it is the tank or not.

What is reasonable mileage for a 2003 VW Golf?
I'm look at a used 2003 VW Golf that has a little over 74,000 miles on it (very good condition). Is that good?
What are acceptable mileages for VW vehicles between 2000 and 2006?What is reasonable mileage for a 2003 VW Golf? Most people drive between 12-15,000 miles per year. I've been in the car business a long time and I can tell you from experience that 12,000 is a good target for you to aim at when it comes to miles per year. Anything over 15,000 miles per year is a cause for concern. So to answer your particular question 74,000 miles for a 7 year old vehicle is not bad.
Hope this helps. What is reasonable mileage for a 2003 VW Golf? That sounds good. Now check the other stuff.

What engine oil for VW Jetta 96 for winter?
I heard that some people use a different grade of engine oil for the winter.
What grade do you suggest for a VW Jetta 96 (gas) ?What engine oil for VW Jetta 96 for winter? The same oil as you use in summer. Engine manufacturers carefully select the recommended motor oil viscosity grade for each specific engine, which is why the owners manual recommended viscosity should always be used. What engine oil for VW Jetta 96 for winter?
The Mobil1 website calls for 10W-40 to be used in your motor year round. Good luck getting the car started in the Winter. Call a VW dealer for sure. 10W-40 is non energy conserving motor oil.
Mobil1 makes a 0W-40 which would let the car start easier but do what ever VW says to do.What engine oil for VW Jetta 96 for winter?I'd go with the weight specified by diabolically intelligent German engineers as published in the owners manual or available by calling the dealer and NOT what some anonymous knucklehead on yahoo tells you to use. Just sayin'.What engine oil for VW Jetta 96 for winter?
Manufacturer suggests whatever for whatever temperature. If you live in Hawaii, then winter never comes say compared to Anchorage,Alaska. What engine oil for VW Jetta 96 for winter?use the grade VW put on your oil cap always. Multi viscosity oils take care of the rest.

How long can my VW be expected to last?
It's a '99 Beetle, about 106,000 miles. Oil changed every 3,000, good general maintenance. No accidents. Most of my miles are highway. How long can it last given all of this? I don't want any "it will last as long as you take care of it" answers because that is just plain not true. What I want to know is how long VW Beetles generally last. How long can my VW be expected to last?If you take good car of your car with preventative maintenance... the thing will last forever. I had a 92' Jetta with 320,000 miles on it. sold it to my cousin for $100 and the thing is still going.

im quite suprised its still running now (im not being sarcastic or joking)... they are notoriously bad cars and its not unusal to hear people scrapping them out at 100,000 miles. the 1998 beetle marked the downfall of volkswagen... since then, they havent been able to get off the least reliable car list of any of 3 consumer watchdog companies.

What type of gas should i use in a VW GTI?
I've heard 87, 91, and 93. ive heard 87 decreases power, but is it really noticeable? is 93 octane worth the 20 extra cents on the gallon? should i switch to a VW Golf which is Diesel? What type of gas should i use in a VW GTI?When I bought my GTI the dealer said I should use 91 or higher. ( it also says this on the fuel cover door). The dealer said you can use 89 but it will result in decreased power and fuel economy. You should not use 87. This was for the MKV GTI. Would installing an aftermarket radio lose power in a VW monsoon sound system?
I have a 2001 VW Passat with the monsoon sound system. I have read that this sound system has an amp in the radio and installing an aftermarket head unit would take it out. So would this decrease the power to the speakers if I did this?Would installing an aftermarket radio lose power in a VW monsoon sound system?I used to be a car audio installer and found that installing aftermarket decks in cars with the monsoon system resulted in the system sounding overall worse. If you replaced EVERYTHING and added amps and sub you would have superior system, but the sound quality will take a hit if you only replace the head unit.
Is it ok to put unleaded gas in a VW GTI?
I was seriously considering buying an earlier model (90s) of the VW GTI. However after hearing that they are supposed to take performance grade gas, im having second thoughts. Is this true that they need high performance? Will it damage the engine to use unleaded or will it just run better on high performance gas?
Thanks! Is it ok to put unleaded gas in a VW GTI?I own and drive vw's for a living... There is definetly a difference in the type of fuel. You will get better MPG. And you will have better accelerator reponse. As well less emmisions.. And it burns cleaner in the motor and leaves less residue. As well it also has a cleaner that keeps injectors and others clean. If you keep track like i do you will notice a difference. And for the little extra you pay it pays for itself. But not in one tank. As well if you add all the additives like octane booster, fuel injector cleaner and gasline antifreeze.. Its cheaper to put the performance gas in.Is it ok to put unleaded gas in a VW GTI?
All gas is unleaded. The VR6 Volkswagens are supposed to use a higher octane gas but the 2.0s are fine with low grade.
Are you looking at a mk2 or mk3? Mk2s ended in the early 90's and mk3 started then so you could be referring to either.
Whichever it is I've seen both run on low grade gas and they did just fine.
Higher octane does NOT mean better gas mileage. I hate when people think that. It just changes the amount of compression needed before the gas will ignite without a spark. Lower octane gas will combust under the least amount of compression so when cars are built with high compression ratios they need higher octane. Using an octane too low can cause knocking and will damage the engine (although newer VWs put a knock sensor in so this doesn't happen, instead you lose power) But using an octane that is higher than needed isn't beneficial. Is it ok to put unleaded gas in a VW GTI?all gas is unleaded now it just has different chemicals in it to make it a higher octane,so that will be all you will be able to buy for it,i would use higher octane though if the owners manual cal so for it,you can try 8 octane because most cars built since the 90,s will run good off it,if it dont, go to a higher octane rating like 98 or 91 octane,87 wont hurt it though, good luck.Is it ok to put unleaded gas in a VW GTI?
its pretty much a waste running higher octane fuel in any of the 1.8/2.0 vw unless you built the motor up and have some insane compression...im guessing the motor has at least 100k on it too... just run the 89 you will be fineIs it ok to put unleaded gas in a VW GTI?You can put any gas in any vehicle. It won't damage the engine. It may run better with high octane(depends on how much you believe the advertising)Is it ok to put unleaded gas in a VW GTI?
Right, leaded fuel is no longer available. Regular unleaded fuel would suit the engine just fine for everyday driving.
The rule of thumb is 'if it's a turbo engine, it NEEDS premium gas'

Is there an easy fix or maintenance I could do?How do I fix/prevent roof leak in my VW Beetle? There are 4 drain holes . Open your roof all the way and find them. Anyone know the best place to sell a vw beetle wing mirror?
I had to replace the passenger side wing mirror of my 53-plate VW beetle after someone kindly broke it. Only the inside parts were broken, but I had to buy a complete new mirror from VW :-(
So now I'm left with an unpainted wing mirror case - anyone have any ideas on the best place to sell this? I have absolutely no need for it and would quite like to make a bit of cash back for it - go towards the VW bill!

Does a 01 vw mk4 3 door have the same body kit size as a 5 door?

Checking if this is correct?Does a 01 vw mk4 3 door have the same body kit size as a 5 door?Doubt it considering there are 2 additional doors. But maybe as far as the body kit is concerned, its parts has nothing to do with "length"
Are the 2000 VW Golf's expensive to maintain and are they reliable?
I'm considering getting an automatic 2000 VW golf with 120,000 miles on it. Everything checks out good and it looks like the owner took care of it. However, my dad and some other people have told me that they are unreliable and expensive to repair. (please don't tell me any car is unreliable if not properly maintained, thats only partly true...). Anyway, who has this car and what would you recommend? Are the 2000 VW Golf's expensive to maintain and are they reliable?I have owned this car and my sister-in-law currently drives one as well . I love mine and considered it to be a highly reliable car however mine was a five speed manual I have heard some bad things about that year automatic transmission. The only problems with this car I ever had were sensor issues that I easily fixed myself and I seem to remember them starting at about the hundred thousand mark so maybe they have already been replaced your father is right about the expense of the repairs Volkswagen dealers seem to compare them to their cousin the BMW. But I was able to find a good independent mechanic for my sister in law that did not charge her nearly as much as the dealer. Just remember that buying any used car with this amount of mileage is always somewhat of a gamble but I think your odds are a little better with a Voltswagon then other brands

I have a 4 year old VW Golf. Do local garages provide reliable service and MOT or should I stick to VW dealer?
VW dealers are charging 拢100/hr and I am told I can get things fixed and service a lot cheaper with local garages, particularly when my warranty has expired. There's no point buying extended warranty right?!I have a 4 year old VW Golf. Do local garages provide reliable service and MOT or should I stick to VW dealer?yeah you would be cheaper taking your car to a local garage for service and mot. if your has a full service history i would recommend getting an vw extended warranty if you consider what would happen if your timing belt broke or water pump collapsed and not to mention the various other common faults that could occur, ill bet your local garage wont be able to repair any of those items for the price of a couple hundred pounds for a warranty.you'll find vw pretty much cover everything .worth bearing in mind the cost of vw parts are expensiveI have a 4 year old VW Golf. Do local garages provide reliable service and MOT or should I stick to VW dealer?Even under warranty you didn't need to go to VW for service. There are lots of independent shops that are BETTER than the dealer.

Dealers are for buying new and nothing else once the warrany has expired.I have a 4 year old VW Golf. Do local garages provide reliable service and MOT or should I stick to VW dealer?
well, the problem with going to a local garage is that its not a definite that they will know what they are doing. But as long as they specialize in VW, you should give them a try. Worst case senario, it doesn't work out and you go to the dealership.
The best situation you could have is knowing and being friends with a certified master VW mechanic. You get the BEST deals that way, if they do side work :)

Why wasn't the new or reintroduced VW Volkswagen Beetle made with air cooled engine like the earlier bug?
As above, when they started making the new beetle 10 years back or so, why not use air cooled engine like the old VW bug? Why hasn't any carmaker used air cooled engine since then? Why wasn't the new or reintroduced VW Volkswagen Beetle made with air cooled engine like the earlier bug?THE NEW BEETLE WAS THE FIRST CAR SOLD IN AMERICA BUILT ON THE THEN NEW GOLF PLATFORM.
VW WOULDN'T BUILD A SPECIAL PLATFORM FOR ONE CAR.
PORCHE DOESN'T USE AIR COOLED ENGINES ANY MORE WHY SHOULD VW?Why wasn't the new or reintroduced VW Volkswagen Beetle made with air cooled engine like the earlier bug?Exhaust emissions, heating was a problem...Why wasn't the new or reintroduced VW Volkswagen Beetle made with air cooled engine like the earlier bug?air cooled engines run into over heating issues too much to be successful. the old bugs were fine but leaked oil pretty bad too.Why wasn't the new or reintroduced VW Volkswagen Beetle made with air cooled engine like the earlier bug?
From my understanding from VW, the issues are ones of cost. Air cooled engines run hot; in order to cool them down, they use large "fins" for cooling air flow to reduce temperatures. Because of horsepower issues, emissions, fuel economy concerns and weight, air cooled engines are at a majour disadvantage vs. water cooled motors. Oil leaks which are fairly common on air cooled motors would be a disaster on a air cooled motor created to meet todays emissions and fuel economy standards. On stock VW Beetles, cylinder #3 is known to overheat and have piston problems due to the lack of air flow to cool the piston barrel and head assembly.
Todays engines work on a very tightly controlled temperature and computer operations to deal with emissions and fuel economy. As it has been explained to me, air cooled motors have a much wider temperature range that is very hard to control; fans could do the job, larger surface area of fins (either more of them or/and larger ones), but this increases cost. Water cooled motors allow for a much tighter temperature control, thus making it easier to control various emissions levels, yet, allow the engine temperature to run right at the edge of improving thermal efficiency, without going into overheating. And then there is the issue of oil cooling; it would need a fairly large oil cooler to keep the engine oil from overheating and becoming jelly.... Finally, there is the issue of a heater/defroster operation. The issues of the lack of an effective heater and defroster are legendary to both the public and Beetle owners alike; various attempts to improve the air flow of the heater and defroster have only had marginal effect at making the interior environment more comfortable. The gasolene powered heater that was sometimes used in the type II and other models as an aftermarket option (and in the original year of the Corvair) generated enough heat, but often had odor issues and decreased fuel economy in the process.
Hope this sheds some light into your inquiry, a car nut.

Will a vw diagnostic reveal all engine problems? Like a head gasket or cam damage?
I need to assess how bad a problem I've got with my 97 vw polo is before laying out any more money, will a diagnostic do this? Will a vw diagnostic reveal all engine problems? Like a head gasket or cam damage?A simple inexpensive compression test can show up many problems from piston ring wear to valve damage - cracked block/head and even head gasket leak.
Continuous pressure as opposed to a pistol giving the highest pressure read out. Will a vw diagnostic reveal all engine problems? Like a head gasket or cam damage?
A diagnostic will typically only be effective if there's a MIL or check engine/service engine soon light on. It operates through a series of sensors throughout the powertrain, so yes there can be potentially serious problem the computer won't know about if it's not tripping the system. I had a V6 car once only firing 5 cylinders because the spark plug boot was shorting to the head, and the computer never had a clue. Now if it was a newer one like my '07, I'm pretty sure the computer is involved in EVERYTHING and would freak at the slightest trouble. But ya unless a sensor detects an issue, it's not gonna do much good to run a diagnostic. Will a vw diagnostic reveal all engine problems? Like a head gasket or cam damage?no.. an diagnosis Machine can only diagnose as per its sensors and programming .it will not understand for example 'tapping' or knocking noises from an engine .or if coolant has been contaminated with oil or engine oil with water etc. it cannot find oil leaks and so on.
this is where a trained and experienced mechanic/ technician comes into own. using your information and their training etc they can often pin a fault down to two or three areas and then doing a few checks and tests get to root cause of any issues. Will a vw diagnostic reveal all engine problems? Like a head gasket or cam damage?
No, you need to get someone who knows what they're looking at to diagnose things like that, the computer diagnostic will only report things like "running rich" and "failed such-and-such sensor".Will a vw diagnostic reveal all engine problems? How much would the insurance be on a VW Beetle?
I am 17 and intrested in getting my first car a Classic VW Beelte, does any one know the price range for the insurance on one?
Many thanksHow much would the insurance be on a VW Beetle?There are many factors which are used by the insurer to calculate the risk and so the premium they charge for car insurance - these are mainly;
1 Age and sex of the policyholder (who must be the Main driver, and registered keeper) and that of any additional drivers.
2. The cars age, mileage, value, insurance group, security and the companies own claims history for that vehicle
3. The occupation of the policyholder and any named drivers
4. The claims history of any drivers
5. The licence details of drivers (endorsements, length of time held)
6. Where the car is normally kept overnight (is it the policyholders address? on road is more expensive than on a drive which is more expensive than in a locked garage.
7. What use will the car be insured for, social and domestic is the minimum but if commuting and use for the policyholders business or their employers business is added the price increases. If used to commute where is the car to be parked when there - on road or in a car park.
8. Does the car have any modifications from the standard factory fresh condition like alloy wheels or performance enhancements - some insurers will refuse to cover modified cars, some will increase the price and some will cover them but only for return to standard.
You need to tell the full truth about everything asked and inform them of any changes to any of the details disclosed as the policy goes on - failing to do that can render it null and void.
Some younger drivers consider putting the car and insurance in a parents name with the parent as a fraudulent main driver and them as an occasional named driver to cut the premiums. This common scam is called "Fronting" and is an illegal act which can get parent and son/daughter into a lot of long lasting expensive troubles.
Most insurers offer a monthly payment scheme and most need about 15% up front to start the cover. the scheme is usually in the form of a loan and so interest is charged - this can be as much as 25% APR. This is usually at rate which is higher than most credit cards even charge so look at other ways to borrow the money to spread the cost if possible as it will be cheaper.
With a few minor differences these are the questions you will be asked before being given a quote. Not having supplied ALL of these details on Yahoo Answers, and who would, it is impossible to give a guess of a price for you to within even 拢1000 for a younger newly qualified driver.
EDIT - at 17 you will not be able to get Classic and cheap insurance and it will be insured as any other newer car would be.How much would the insurance be on a VW Beetle?Auto insurance is largely based on where you live, your driving record, car, age etc.. We were just 600 miles from Montreal, after a trip of 9,000 thousand miles, but we got to stop in the neighbourhood of Cleveland, in Orange. In the Yellow Pages, we found a rare place specialized in Volkswagen, called ''The Swedish Solution'' because they could repair Volvo and Saab. I think it's the most beautiful environment I never saw for a garage, surrounded by a forest and gardens, and they have been very kind to take us immediately in the morning so we could pursue our trip. I have a 2004 VW Jetta GLS 1.8T (Manual Trans.) and I have 15" wheels on it and want all season tires. What are the best all seasn tires for this car ? I want some new tires because I may be hitting the road this summer, so I don't want good quiet tires for all seasons.

Have then on my 2007 GTi. They are incredible. So far i have 20,000 miles on then, and they are barely worn in. I only got 25,000 on the factory tires.
Wonderful in the dry, rain, and even snow. And i'm sure if you have to drive in the snow, you know Jetta's aren't the best. Why are there so many questions about VW?
I see umpteen questions about VW's, is it because they are cr4p, they go on for longer, cheap to buy, or what.
It certainly is not that they are cheap to maintain. Why are there so many questions about VW?possibly because people have high expectations of the quality they are supposed to have down to the inflated prices they fetch - for some years now the once high quality has just bnot been there it seemsWhy are there so many questions about VW?
Well as a driver of various new VW's over the last 10 years, golfs, jettas, and currently a top of the line passat, i would say the quality / finish is still top notch.
I have done over 200,000 miles in 0 - 3 year old VW's and have never been left stranded, if they do break they generally go into limp mode to get you home.
All these people that say the are rubbish are possibly slating something which they cannot afford / never actually lived with, all types of cars suffer with the odd 'built on a friday afternoon' issue. Most forums are geared towards cars with issues and not thousands of people praising their faultless car.
Where does the expensive to maintain rumour come from, mine usually costs 拢 250.00 every 20K miles and then the usual extra for belt changes etc etc. Not that expensive at all.
If i ever get an issue with my car i ring up the dealer, he books me in, makes me a nice coffee, gives me the keys to a new golf and say thay will ring me when its done. They even valet my car for me before handing back...........................FANTASTIC SERVICE.

So that means abt. 90 some % of VW buyers are happy.
Plus , car magazines often praise VW quality. For example, Automobile Magazine voted GTI Car of the Year. They bought one and tested/flogged it for a year. One year later, they stated not one single problem
My wife and I have been driving VWs for over 20 years. Currently we own a Jetta and a GTI. Both cars are ultra-reliable. Neither has ever let us down.
Contrary to what some believe, VWs are a joy to maintain! We have over 60,000 reliable and free of worry miles on them. The only things we have done maintenance-wise is change oil/filter. My friends who own VWs back this up . Myth debunked!
Are VWs perfect? Of course not. There are some years and models I would shy away from. Overall, though I remain loyal to VW.

Can I rebuild old 60's vw engines than sell them for good profit?
I have seen some old vw engines for sale that are in good condition. I was wondering if I could rebuild it then sell it. I plan on making it almost as good as a turn key.Can I rebuild old 60's vw engines than sell them for good profit?36 h.p.an 40h.p. don't have cam bearings. The block can be machined for them. Most people want the bigger cc motors like 1500, an 1600cc.
But the 36 h.p. is desireable to restorers. I estimate parst an machine shop work to turn out a turn key 1600cc would be $2.000, if you have to buy parts. Carb. flywheel, clutch generator. If you go to 1776 or 1915 cc add another thousand. So whats your profit going to be.Can I rebuild old 60's vw engines than sell them for good profit? You can rebuild them and sell them for a profit, but it all depends on how much you pay for them in the first place and what condition they are in.
If you are doing this as a kind of business, your customers will be expecting some kind of guarantee too, so you'll have to take that into account as well.
Good luck though - there is definitely a market there for them. Can I rebuild old 60's vw engines than sell them for good profit?I can't say that for certain, but I know alot of folks use the old beetles as the basis for sand rails. How do you change the parking brake on an MK1 VW Jetta?
As the title states, the MK1 VW Jettas were produced from 1980-1984, and share the brake design with the 1975-1984 VW Golf/Rabbit.

The traction control light in my 99 VW Passat flashes on and off?
When I take a turn (driving normally) the traction control light in my 99 VW Passat flashes on and off, but it does'nt stay on. It has only done this a few times. My ABS light does not come one when this happens. It also causes my car to slow down for just a few seconds. The traction control light in my 99 VW Passat flashes on and off?You probably have a bad wheel sensor that's sending a signal to the traction control that it needs to adjust when in fact it doesn't. Head for your nearest VW dealer and have them check the sensors. Good Luck.redlobster
How do you use Cruise Control on VW Golf TDI?
I have just purchased a new VW Golf and i am wondering how to work the Cruise Control. Do i need to set it to a certain speed, how does it kick in?
Also how does the Ipod work, ive plugged it in but nothing come up on the radio. Any info? How do you use Cruise Control on VW Golf TDI?Read the manual, it will answer all your questions. If your radio is not ipod compatible, it's won't work. How do you use Cruise Control on VW Golf TDI?
Cruise Control in a Golf is set as follows:
On the left side of the steering wheel, locate the turn indicator and pass beam lever. On the top edge of the lever, locate a rotary switch, it should have the following positions "ON" "CANCEL" "OFF". Turn the rotary switch to the "ON" position. This will turn 'ON' Cruise Control.
Next, you have to make use of the dual position switch located on the left edge of the turn indicator lever. It should read "SET" and should have two positions reading "+" and "-". Once you have turned the cruise control "ON", take your foot off the gas (accelerator) pedal and use the two position switch, press the switch towards "SET"; this will set the cruise control speed to the current vehicle speed. "+" will increment the speed and "-" will decrement the speed. Once you select the speed, the car will cruise at the selected speed.
To turn the cruise control off, use the rotary switch position "CANCEL" or "OFF". "CANCEL" will only disable the current set cruising speed and allow you to take control of the car manually and/or select a new speed. "OFF" will turn of the cruise control capability. Hitting the gas (accelerator) or brake pedal will also disable cruise control. Please use excessive caution if you're trying this for the first time.
NOTE: The Cruise Control can be used only when the car speed is above 30 Kmph, it can not be used when the car is stationary.
I am not aware of the Ipod, but ideally, there should be a 'AUX' setting in the Stereo Menu which interfaces with external peripherals. How do you use Cruise Control on VW Golf TDI?i dont know anytihng about vw but usually you get up to a speed and hit the button and it'll keep it there. and as for the ipod, theres probably a button that says band that lets you switch between am/fm/cd/tape/ipod or whatever else is on your car.How do you use Cruise Control on VW Golf TDI?

How to disconnect mileage counter on new VW golf?
I need some help. Im doing a trip this weekend I dont want my parents to know about, so how do i disconnect the total mileage counter clock so i can do the miles and them not know. Also how do i reattach it afterwards? The car is an 07 reg VW golf.
Please help!
ThanksHow to disconnect mileage counter on new VW golf? You can't as it's illegal to drive a car without the mileage working correctly.
If you were allowed to do it then people would stop their mileage from working and then sell their cars with "low mileage".
If you want to do a trip in their car, then grow up and ask them and if they say no, accept it.
KDHow to disconnect mileage counter on new VW golf?
Your screwed.
Older cars it would have been relatively easy but modern cars a lot harder. Also, if you disconnect the mileage counter you will probably also be disconnecting the speedometer which means you leave yourself open to the good old speeding tickets. How would you explain that one away.
Are you insured for the vehicle? How would you explain away it being seized if you got stopped by the bizys if you got caught speeding.

Is it possible to put a 1974 Porsche 914 engine into a 1979 VW bus?
I just recently found a 1974 Porsche 914 engine and I was curious if it would be easy to put it in my 1979 VW transporter. And if its safe to have in the bus. If anyone can help me out it would be greatly appreciated! Is it possible to put a 1974 Porsche 914 engine into a 1979 VW bus?yes It might work I've heard of it being done before and it should be somewhat easy. The engines are very similar, they both are air-cooled flathead motors that have four cylinders and are around the same size. I'm not so sure if the vw transmission would bolt up to it though, but it might. They might actually be the same block if its one of the four cylinder motors but I don't know for sure. Well Other than that it should slide right in. I know that you can put a Chevy corvair 6 cylinder engine in one of those by reversing the rotation of the engine, modifying the engine compartment, and using a special adapter to bolt it onto the transmission. I've actually done some research on doing that and it's definitely doable. Well I hope this helps. Is it possible to put a 1974 Porsche 914 engine into a 1979 VW bus?Yes you can. It should bolt right up, but you might need to change the flywheel.
The 914 is a 2.0 and a little stronger of an engine. It has an extra head bolt.Is it possible to put a 1974 Porsche 914 engine into a 1979 VW bus?Yes it can. Both use a 411 block. Just make sure the rear motor mounts can bolt to the engine block I'm pretty sure it does. Good Luck.longhorn steakhouse locations

Most of the ones I see that are cheap need engines.

Once you look at this, Click on the Classified Button and look through the listings. You will find lots of them(new and used). You can also click the search button and enter engines and select an area near you. That will narrow it down some...no sense in looking at body parts when you want an engine. :-)How much would an engine for a VW bus cost?
I would look on ebay, craigslist, or a local junk yard/ scrapyard.
I have seen these engines as high as $4,000 with the transmission and as low as $300 without the transmissions. The ones that are more expensive are usually in better condition. Make sure that you look when the engine last ran, how many miles it has on it, and if it needs to be rebuilt. How much would an engine for a VW bus cost?If your going for the $300. used junkyard engine, there are some things to check. First is compression and cylinder leaks round the heads. They will usually hiss at you when you do a compression test. Next is the end play. When new they we set to .007 to .013. they quickly loosed up but by the time they were a noticeable clunk, you might have to many miles on it.
Next -take the oil screen plate off and see how much foul white ash is piled up in it. If it had any kind of maintenance- there won't be any.
Watch for oil leaks between the flywheel end of the crank and the #3 exhaust port. These blocks liked to crack where that oil galley which feed the back bearing turned the corner.
If you get one with invested nuts in the block- make sure the threads are OK.
Good things to look for are "case savers"(metal inserts in the block where the head bolts go). Evidence of machine work where the cylinders mate with the block. And an over sized oil pump or even better the pump with the oil filter built into it. I'm not a big fan of remotely mounted filters and coolers.
Check the gen for noise with the belt off -spin it by hand and check for loose bearings and then when running.
Keep in mind that a quality bolt in and go rebuilt cost about $3000. More without a core. How much would an engine for a VW bus cost?

How do i pop my hood with a DEAD BATTERY in a 2000 vw passat.?
I have a 2000 VW Passat and my battery is dead. I cannot Get into the car because the key does not turn in the trunk or door. I just want to get under the hood to replace the battery. Any suggestions other than breaking the window or calling a tow truck? I might get a new Audi A4, any reasons not to?How do i pop my hood with a DEAD BATTERY in a 2000 vw passat.?I assume that if the battery were charged that you could use your remote to open the door...
Not familiar with the passat but starters are starters.
If you can get to the starter solenoid and find the + battery cable, you could hook a battery charger or jumper cable there to charge the battery (the neg connection simply goes to some bare metal on the engine or vehicle frame). Some vehicles have the starter solenoid mounted to the starter and very frequently you can reach the starter from under the car. If the starter solenoid is not mounted to the starter, it will likely be difficult to reach. The other option would be the main output terminal of the alternator which also goes to the battery + terminal.
If you could find someone with a similar car or one at a used car lot where the salesman will let you look under the hood, you might be able to follow the battery cable to see where it goes. How do i pop my hood with a DEAD BATTERY in a 2000 vw passat.?
That dosn't make sense? How do i pop my hood with a DEAD BATTERY in a 2000 vw passat.?Try using a metal hanger with a loop you make at the bottom of it to pop the door lock. You may need a small wedge to keep the molding away from the window while you try to hook it.
call AAA for a few bucks they can get it open quick with little damageHow do i pop my hood with a DEAD BATTERY in a 2000 vw passat.?1. find BIG rock
2. hit window with BIG rock
3. reach in and open door
4. now follow the normal procedures you would normally use !
BTW....I agree your question makes no sense at all ! Ya don't need a good battery to turn a frigging key !How do i pop my hood with a DEAD BATTERY in a 2000 vw passat.?
!!! ANY reason not to get a new Audi A4?
I think being locked out of your current VW due to a dead battery is plenty good reason not to get another VW! (In case you're not sure, Audi and VW is the same company and the cars are exactly the same except the Audis usually have Quattro.)
Anyway, you probably need to get a tow to the VW dealer. Tow+what the dealer will charge you, you better "get out you're f'in check book!"
Tools you will need: good sized sledge hammer.
Directions: take a good swing at the grille. Try to remove it as much as possible. Then, take another at the hood, try to work the hood out of the latch. (this may require multiple hits) If you have to get into the wreck sooner than you'll replace the battery, like if you'll want to blow it up. Use the sledge hammer to remove the window. How do i pop my hood with a DEAD BATTERY in a 2000 vw passat.?
If the key won't turn, are you sure you have the right car? Maybe that is why the remote doesn't work either.

Im deciding between a new 2010 VW Golf Highline manual, or Mazda3 Sport GT manual, and I want to haggle the best possible deal. Many sites advise of a 2-3% factory hold-backs, but these are america sites, and I dont know if these same holdbacks are available in Canada. What are the factory hold-back % on VW and Mazda cars in Toronto, Canada?"Holdbacks" are generally only used with GM, Ford and Chrysler. I've never worked for an import car company that had them.
Just a bit of advice here. If you're going to keep the car longer than 4-5 years, buy the Mazda. Volkeswagesn are simply not reliable after that. Consumer Reports and others will verify that fact. What are the factory hold-back % on VW and Mazda cars in Toronto, Canada?Holdback is based on several things, and will vary from dealer to dealer. Advertising, sales quotas, and C.S.I. are a few of the factors. Do you really think a dealer is going to go into holdback money to put a deal together on a popular car? Good luck.

Can anyone find instruction for installing aftermarket blow off valve on 2002 VW Passat?
I have a stock turbo charged VW Passat and was interested in installing an after market blow off valve. However, I can't find a video or instructions on how to.Can anyone find instruction for installing aftermarket blow off valve on 2002 VW Passat? The aftermarket blow off valve will simply replace the factory diverter valve. Unlike GTIs, Jettas, and TTs with the transverse 1.8T, the Passat and A4 longitudinal 1.8T makes the diverter valve a pain in the neck to get to. You can access eat either by jacking up the car and working from underneath, or by removing the passenger side lower grill, which it is directly behind. Once you find the valve, all you need to know is to remove the stock DV by removing the two larger hose clamps and one smaller hose clamp, slide the hoses off, then connect the small hose and the one coming off the side of the factory DV to your new BOV.
Just a side note, 1.8Ts are not designed to work well with blow off valves, since they have airflow metered by a MAF. Running a BOV will cause your car to run rich, but if you don't care then more power to you. The preferred route is to purchase an aftermarket piston-type diverter valve. Can anyone find instruction for installing aftermarket blow off valve on 2002 VW Passat? When you buy one it will have the instructions with it.

How to build a 9 second VW air cooled Beetle?
Old school VW Bugs going from like 6secs to 12+ secs. What's the usual build? Cost etc?How to build a 9 second VW air cooled Beetle?you have to use a type 4 engine which you can machine into 3000cc and bigger. and the times you are seeing that are 6 secs are not 1/4 mile times, rather they are 1/8 miles times. if NHRA funny cars are doing a 1/4 mile in 4.5 secs there is no way a bug with any street legal engine is going to be close to that.
so you need a type 4 case and about $10,000 to build just the engine. then you have to spend in excess of $5-8,000 to reinforce the chassis, body, modify suspension, steering, install roll bars, etc etc

How can I make my VW Jetta Diesel faster?
I have a VW Jetta Wagon that's a 1.8 liter turbo diesel (manual). However, it's quite sluggish off the line. I'd like to give it some kick, if possible. Any suggestions or advice? How can I make my VW Jetta Diesel faster? What year is it? The US never got a 1.8L diesel VW.
Assuming you're in the US, the Jetta wagon could be. . .
2003 - 90hp/155tq ALH 1.9L TDI
2004-2005 - 100hp/~175tq BEW/PD 1.9L TDI
or 2009-2010 - 140hp/236tq 2.0L CBEA/CJAA 2.0l TDI
The '03 is the easiest to make power with. New Injector nozzles and a chip tune will get you to around 140hp/250+tq and is the lightest of the three. But you may need a clutch at that point. This can all be done for less than $1,000 including the clutch. $1,500 if you have someone else install the clutch and nozzles for you.
The '04-'05 PD can make a lot of power, but it's more expensive to do so. A chip tune would be your best bet, putting you around 125-130hp for $500 or so, depending on which tuner you go with and how heavy of a tune you want. Nozzles are once again a good upgrade, but the PDs injector system is much more complex than the ALH's and therefore parts are a lot more expensive.
The 09-10s really don't have many performance parts out yet, there are some tuners out claiming they're seeing 180hp with just a tune, but dyno claims have shown 10-15hp jumps instead of the claimed 40hp boost. Again, $500-$600 depending on the tuner. How can I make my VW Jetta Diesel faster?the TDI clud is awesome group. i done have water/alcohol mist inj. and hydroxy gas inj. on the old 1.5, 1.6 d +1.6 td

Normally you would press lightly on the side and it would flip open with no problem, but someone at one station forced it shut and now it's stuck. Is there any way to open it manually to put fuel in before they try to head to the dealer and fix it?How to manually open a VW Polo fuel tank? It's a guess based on my experience with US spec VW's, but maybe it'll help:
Here goes:
Try locking and unlocking the doors 2-3 times before you open the fuel door. The Golf (and maybe polo) has a locking pin that comes down and locks the door when the driver's door is locked and it may be stuck. Locking and unlocking may work it loose.
Good luck.

How do you fit a speedometer cable onto a 1971/72 vw camper van?
We have a 1971/72 VW camper 1600 twin port. The speedo cable attaches to the front passenger side inside the wheel hub.We got a new cable as we had a blow out and new tyre but we cannot get it to work now. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many Thanks xHow do you fit a speedometer cable onto a 1971/72 vw camper van?Hmm. It's a very simple setup, so I'm not sure if my this will help, but I hope it does.
One end goes to the speedometer. It's the end that can connect to the speedometer. That doesn't seem to be the problem.
The other end goes through the center of the wheel hub, all the way through. The square shaft on that end of the cable goes through the square hole in the hub cap - not the decorative hubcap, but the little one that keeps the grease packed into the hub and bearings. There's a little circle clip that keeps the shaft from coming out after it's pushed through the hub cap. Then the hub cap is pressed onto the hub so that the bearing and grease are covered - you might need to pull the cable back through the hub from behind just a little bit.
That's it. If you have more questions, edit your question and I'll edit my answer with an update. :-)How do you fit a speedometer cable onto a 1971/72 vw camper van?It has to fit all the way thru the dust cap that goes over the wheel bearing adjusting nut. It has a square hole the accepts the square end of the cable. There is then a 'C' clip that keeps it from slipping back thru the dust cap.

How I know if my VW Beetle 99 has good level of coolant?
The top of the coolant tank is a spheroid, this cold morning the coolant level was between the middle and the bottom, slightly close to the middle. (I would say it has 1/4 of full capacity at the top)
Actually, what is the right level for VW Beetle 99?How I know if my VW Beetle 99 has good level of coolant? There is going to be a line on the overflow tank (that's what you're looking at, the overflow tank, not the actual coolant tank). That line will usually say "Max hot". What that means is, when the engine is warmed up and at the normal operating temperature, the coolant should be no higher than that line. Cold it will be lower.
Never measure coolant level when cold.

How do you repair the VW oil filter housing?
I changed the oil for the first time in my VW Golf (R32) and the little oil filter drain plug Torx fitting is stripped out. How on earth would I get that out...or should I just replace the entire housing ($55) and drain plug ($20)?How do you repair the VW oil filter housing? If you have the funds available I would replace the whole assembly. If there haven't been any leaks so far it is likely torqued correctly, but the next time you go to change the oil you will have to deal with it again. You have until your next oil change to get that parts, I would do it then so you don't have to spend the money on the oil until you are ready too.

1) Pop off the plastic housing .
2) Disconnct the horn (or pull the horn fuse) ..it wont hurt you or the car but it is just plain irritating when you keep accidentally hitting the ground wire..(and you will)
3) Use a socket and a long wrench (36mm I think) to remove the wheel nut. Hold the wheel against the wrench or you may bend the locking pin. Once you break the nut it spins off easily. You may or may not need a steering wheel puller.. usually you can work the wheel right off by pulling on the opposite side of the wheel in alternating yanks
4) Once the wheel is off you will see the lock assembly and the single screw that holds it in place.
5) The simple solution is to simply buy a new lock / key set and remove and replace the old one rather then to have a new key made for the worn keyway. Most lock shops have them. Watch the wires and the wiring as you replace it., then just reverse the process.
As an alternate, out here in California it costs about $60 to have the process done (lock included).
Further alternate.. if you have AAA membership check to see if this is covered.. they may pick up the whole tab.

What is the life expectancy of a 1998 or 1999 VW New Beetle?

My '98 2.0L manual is coming up to 210,000km and is still going strong. Mainly regular maintenance like light bulbs, oil and filter changes. I've had to replace the radiator right after I bought it because the previous owner cracked it. I've had to replace the ignition coil, because after 10 years of hot/cold cycles it's started to develop stress cracks on the housing. That is the sum total. What is the life expectancy of a 1998 or 1999 VW New Beetle?Any(and notice I use the word "Any") car can last one or two days(if you just don't give a rat's pat-toii about following the owners manual) in regards to breaking it in, and recommended rpm's between shifts(on a standard) and what is recommended on an automatic.(I don't own an automatic , cause that is too "girly" for me.
Or almost any car, I have to say almost for there was a run of cars in the 70's that would begin to rust from the inside out because of the composition of the steel(an activating oxidizer was thrown in the molten metal). And the steel is formulated according to the auto manufacters demands.
Even if the car stayed in the showroom and never saw the outdoors it would rust. The government stepped in on that because automanufacturers were "forcing people" to buy new cars by destroying the older ones.
So, if you maintain your car according to manufacturers specs. and drove accordingly (and didn't get into an accident) and repaired minor problems before they got large.....no reason not to expect 30-50 years out of them if not longer. The Model T still floats around(1919 somewhere and many cars from the 20's,30's,40's are in vintage car clubs or in old peoples garages.
It is really up to the driver. You buy a new shirt, pants, shoes - you take care of them they will last......you go parting with ditch pigs and fixing machinery or cars or doing construction work in them, they will last a couple of days maybe.

How do I replace the rubber door seal on my VW camper?
I have recently bought a 78 bay window VW camper and need to replace the driver and passenger rubber door seals as they are perished. Can i do this myself or is it a garage job?How do I replace the rubber door seal on my VW camper? This is an easy job. Not even a full beer (grin).
1) Order the part.. do NOT remove the old seal until you actually have the right part . You can prob. find it at J.C, Whitney or any of the VW parts houses (google them ).
2) With the part in hand, check it against the in-place part.. these things are great when they are the right part, but a lot of time they send you the wrong one.
3) Got the right part? ok.. pull the old one out.. you may have to cut it to get a starting point. It is usually just held in by compression, but a little bit of rubber cement never hurts.
4) Stretch out the rubber and fit it into the channel then compress it back into place. Work your way around the door so that you end up with a uniform seal with no gaps.
5) DO BOTH SIDES.. yeah,,, the other side is fine, but replace it anyway AFTER you learn how with the other side.
(come to think of it .. maybe this IS a full beer job).

Like the other guy said, first make sure the new part matches properly.
After you get the old seal off, clean off any residue from the old adhesive.
Apply a bead of fresh adhesive (3M makes a very good weatherstrip adhesive. Go with the black.) to the weatherstrip AND to the door where it will fit using an acid brush.
Let the adhesive get tacky, then set the weatherstrip in place. Tape the bottom up against the door if it sags, (use masking tape as not to harm the rubber or your paint) %26amp; leave the door open until the adhesive is cured. (You may want to pull the fuse for the interior light as not to run your battery down.)
Brush the new moulding lightly with baby powder before closing the door.
You're done.

What is the best kind of front end for a vw baja bug?
i know there are different kinds of front ends for vw's. i would like to know what type is the best for making a baja bug? i read that it is the one that has a torsion bar.. is this correct? What is the best kind of front end for a vw baja bug?Link/King pin front end is the stronger one if you are looking for a stock front end. Torsion is correct (as apposed to a super beetle strut front end), but a through rod with coil over shocks is even better for more travel. Check out Eagle Performance, Dan's Performance, Latest Rage or buy a Hot VW magazine to get an idea of prices for a front beam.
I am going to be building an A Arm coil over front end for my 73 VW Thing. I am looking to get 20"+ of suspension travel out of the front. I am going to build 6x6 rear trailing arms for 20"+ rear travel too.
I am running a link pin with through rod (6" wider than stock beam) and 2.25" longer arms on the front of my dune buggy. It has 14" of strapped suspension travel and works nice.

Any current or previous drivers have an opinion on the VW BEETLE?
Im thinking of buying a 2000 VW Beetle but I've heard a lot of bad reviews on it. I heard it takes a lot to repair the smallest things. The used car dealer wants $6,500 for it. It's a manual 5 speed and the engine is 2.0L I4. It also has 62k miles on it. Is this a good deal?Any current or previous drivers have an opinion on the VW BEETLE?Coming from a dealer $6500 seems like a good price with only 62,000 miles on it. In times of a better economy I don't doubt it would be priced about $2000 more. My daughter drives a 2001 Volkswagen Beetle GL and she thinks it is a great little car and a joy to drive. I have driven it a few times and I think it is a bit uncomfortable but it is fun to drive. One thing for sure is that it handles real well and gets excellent traction in snow, although the automatic transmission shift from gear to gear has a very noticeable lag in very cold weather even after the engine warms to operating temperature and even in our normal midwest cold temperatures it has a nasty tendency to hang in 1st gear if the engine is not given a good warm up before driving. But the one you are thinking about buying has a manual transmission and so you won't have to worry about automatic transmission problems like that. As far as the repair work it has needed, right from the outset it was in the shop for battery cable connection problems and problems with the hood release. Even now the hood won't release unless someone lifts on the hood while another is pulling the release. It had transmission work done on it and a cracked cylinder head replaced as well a starter replacement and alternator replacement along with the battery connection problems and hood release problems while it was still under the 4 year factory warranty but the dealer has always given her a loaner to drive if it was in the shop more than one day for warranty work. It has been a fairly reliable car since those warranty repairs and the other issues it has had have just been the normal minor stuff and my daughter has been happy with it.Any current or previous drivers have an opinion on the VW BEETLE?The bad reviews for the beetle are warranted. Volkswagon has been known for lots of reliability issues, particularly in 2000. I would avoid it and find something else. That is, unless you like to make frequent trips to the mechanic.Any current or previous drivers have an opinion on the VW BEETLE?First if you cant drive a stick forget it, you will need a new clutch in one week. I personally do not like the beetle. Hit by a truck, it becomes your new home as in Coffin.
Help with Exhaust Emmission Warning Light being on on my VW?
My girlfriend's VW Beetle has the engine shaped light with a little lightening strike through it on and it says "Check" What does this mean and is it expensive to fix. It has just had a new back box fitted and the Catalylictic Converter replaced. What can I do to get the light of and car fixed?Help with Exhaust Emmission Warning Light being on on my VW?Hi
This is the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) and it is telling you that there are one or more fault codes stored relating to a current problem with the cars engine management system, and I'm going to guess that its either LOW OUTPUT or INACTIVITY at the lambda (O2) sensor.
Either that or CATALYTIC EFFICIENCY BELOW THRESH HOLD. Which would just need resetting because the cat is new and it may just be a glitch.
Have the codes read out and then point your finger at me and laugh when you find that I'm way off!!!
Best regards

Either that or CATALYTIC EFFICIENCY BELOW THRESH HOLD. Which would just need resetting because the cat is new and it may just be a glitch.
Have the codes read out and then point your finger at me and laugh when you find that I'm way off!!!
Best regards
