So I love cooking Mediterranean dishes, as well as Thai on occasion. Both of which use a fair amount of garlic in their recipes. Yet it always drives me crazy that I can smell the garlic on hands for the next few days. Any ideas on how to get/keep the smell off? Thanks.
And please, no answers like "use a garlic press," "wear gloves" or "use canned chopped garlic." I enjoy using fresh ingredients and preparing them myself when I cook, and I would like to continue doing that.Is there any way to avoid getting the garlic smell on my hands after handling it?
Rub your hands against anything stainless steel afterword. It really works... I have a stainless steel sink and after I handle garlic, I just rub my fingers in it and it goes away. Not sure how, but it does.
If you insist on handling the garlic you are going to have to put up with the odor.
when doing Asian food especially hot peppers I always use the very thin plastic gloves made for preparing food, it is much better than accidentally touching your eye or other sensitive body parts after chopping up peppers and garlic is about the same.Is there any way to avoid getting the garlic smell on my hands after handling it?
Just rinse your hands and any utensils in cold water as soon as you're finished dealing with the garlic. No soap, no warm water. Just cold water. I use garlic almost every day and have been doing the cold water rinse for years. I never have any garlic smell on my hands, the knife, or the cutting board.
I am sure there are a bazillion remedies LOL......I did hear of one that sounded pretty far fetched and because it is..I assume it works.......Take a large stainless steal chef knife....Run cold water directly on the knife for 30 seconds..Place tips of fingers on the center of the knife. Do not place fingers on the sharp blade of the knife....Repeat as necessary...Make sure the water is cold and not luke warm...The knife must be stainless steal...
But of course it doesn't have to be a knife.....it can be a spoon.........
Let me know if it works............Is there any way to avoid getting the garlic smell on my hands after handling it?
I used to work at a pizza place when I was a teenager and I always hated that smell! So one night I was told to use one of the tomatoes and squeeze the juices on my hands and then wash my hands. So just try washing your hands with a tomato and then of course with soap and water.
I don't know how any other solution but wearing gloves would affect what you were doing besides keeping the smell off your hands..
Rub a teaspoon under running water. A chemical reaction will occur and remove the smell without soap or creams
rub you hands and finger with a stainless steel spoon under water for a bit then use soap
if it still smells do it again
works with onion too!
i have use this method for years
Just wash your hands really well and use a scented cream! The scent of the cream should cover the garlic smell
Try using vanilla extract on your hands. It is very strong so only use a couple drops.
yup rub a piece of lemon over ur palms ans hands.leave it on for a few mins n then wash.no more garlic smell.
i use latex gloves lol
They are correct who say rub your hands on something stainless steel! (I would not suggest a knife, though...too dangerous!). I once saw in a kitchen supply store a hunk of stainless steel shaped like a bar of soap and polished to a lustrous shine. It cost $20. or something, so I didn't buy it. I started using the stainless steel faucet in my kitchen sink, and it does the same thing! It really does work, but I don't know how or why.
